# Laravilt vs Filament: Which Laravel Admin Panel Should You Pick?

> Both describe an admin panel with a fluent PHP API. Filament renders it with Livewire; Laravilt renders it with Inertia and Vue 3 or React 19. An honest comparison from someone who maintains plugins for both.

I maintain both sides of this comparison. TomatoPHP is 68 plugins for Filament, and I built Laravilt. So I'll give you the honest version, including where Filament is the better choice.

**The short answer:** pick **Filament** if your team is happy with Livewire and you want the biggest plugin ecosystem in Laravel today. Pick **Laravilt** if your team writes Vue or React, you want the admin panel to share your frontend's components, and you're starting on Laravel 13.

## What they have in common

Both let you describe an admin panel in PHP instead of hand-writing CRUD screens. You define panels, resources, forms, tables, actions and widgets with a fluent API, and the framework builds the screens. If you've written a Filament resource, a Laravilt resource will look familiar:

```php
public static function configure(Schema $form): Schema
{
    return $form->schema([
        Section::make('Product')->columns(2)->schema([
            TextInput::make('name')->required()->maxLength(255),
            TextInput::make('price')->numeric()->prefix('$')->required(),
            Toggle::make('is_active')->default(true),
        ]),
    ]);
}
```

Both are open source under MIT, and both support multiple panels, multi-tenancy and plugins.

## The real difference: the frontend

**Filament** renders through **Livewire**, Alpine.js and Tailwind (the TALL stack). The UI is server-rendered Blade components that update over Livewire requests. You customise it in Blade and PHP.

**Laravilt** renders through **Inertia**, with **Vue 3** (shadcn-vue) or **React 19** (shadcn/ui), Tailwind CSS v4 and TypeScript. The layouts, sidebar and UI primitives are published into your app, so they're your components. A custom field is a PHP class plus a Vue or React component.

That's the whole decision, really. The PHP side looks similar. The question is which frontend your team wants to own.

## Side by side

| | Filament | Laravilt |
|---|---|---|
| Rendering | Livewire + Alpine.js | Inertia + Vue 3 or React 19 |
| UI kit | Filament's own Blade components | shadcn-vue or shadcn/ui, published into your app |
| Custom field | PHP class + Blade view | PHP class + Vue or React component |
| Laravel versions | Several, depending on the major version | Laravel 13 (PHP 8.3+) for 1.1; 1.0.x on Laravel 11–12, Vue only |
| Ecosystem | Large and mature | Young and smaller |
| Built-in auth | Login, registration and profile pages | 2FA, passkeys, social login, API tokens, sessions, chosen at install |
| AI | Through plugins | AI package (multiple providers), AI chat and AI global search |
| Packaging | One framework plus plugins | 15 MIT composer packages, install all or some |
| AI-readable docs | — | Hosted MCP server at mcp.laravilt.com |

## When Filament is the better pick

- **You need a lot of plugins today.** Filament's ecosystem is far bigger. If a plugin already does what you need, that saves weeks.
- **Your team doesn't want a JavaScript build in the admin.** With Livewire, most changes stay in PHP and Blade.
- **You're on an older Laravel version.** Laravilt 1.1 targets Laravel 13.
- **You want a long track record.** Filament has years of production use behind it. Laravilt is younger.

## When Laravilt is the better pick

- **Your product's frontend is already Vue or React.** The admin panel can use the same components, design system and patterns instead of a second UI stack.
- **You want to own the UI code.** Layouts and primitives live in your app, not in a vendor package.
- **You want auth and AI on day one.** The installer offers 2FA, passkeys, social login, API tokens and AI features as options.
- **You use AI coding assistants.** The hosted MCP server lets Claude Code or any MCP client read the docs and changelogs directly.

## Can you move from Filament to Laravilt?

The PHP API is close enough that much of a resource definition carries over, and the docs include a Filament migration section. It isn't a drop-in replacement, though. Custom Blade views and Livewire components need rewriting as Vue or React components, and Filament plugins don't run in Laravilt.

## Honest limits of Laravilt

- The ecosystem is small. Count the plugins you need before you commit.
- You pick one frontend stack per app. Switching later means re-running the installer on a matching starter kit.
- Some 1.1 limits are documented: editable table columns are read-only inside relation managers and card grids, and passkeys rely on `laragear/webauthn`, which is no longer maintained upstream.

## FAQ

### Is Laravilt a fork of Filament?
No. Laravilt is a separate framework with a similar PHP API. It renders through Inertia with Vue or React, not through Livewire, and Filament plugins don't run in it.

### Is Laravilt free?
Yes. It's 15 open-source composer packages under the MIT licence.

### Does Filament support Vue or React?
Filament's UI is built on Livewire and Alpine.js. If you want the admin panel itself rendered in Vue or React, that's what Laravilt is for.

### Which is better for a SaaS admin panel?
Both support multi-tenancy. Pick by frontend: Filament if your team is fine with Livewire, Laravilt if your SaaS already runs on Vue or React.
